Anaheim Flag Day Story:

About 22 years ago, when Sally Feldhaus, wife of then Anaheim Council Member, Frank Feldhaus, was attending events where the National Anthem was sung and the Pledge of Allegiance would be recited, she noticed something troubling.  Respectful traditions of singing along, taking off your hat and showing pride and respect had given way to people chatting to one another during these important ceremonious acts.  She decided that while she may not be able to change the generation that had fallen away from these traditions, she could certainly try to instill into our youth a pride for our country.
She formed a committee which put together an event that would take place in honor of Flag Day, a holiday established by Woodrow Wilson in 1916.  As part of the celebration that began in 1996, more than 35,000 Anaheim students have entered the “What the American Flag Means to Me” essay contest, recognizing the flag’s symbolism of freedom, loyalty and justice as American principles that the country and all within it should stand for. First and second place essay contest winners walk in the Anaheim Flag Day Parade along with elected public officials, fire fighters, police officers, bands and community organizations such as Altrusa, Kiwanis and Lions Clubs. Every first place winner from each participating school is also awarded two, one day Disneyland Park Hopper passes, graciously donated by Disney.
Now in its 22nd year, this year’s Flag Day Celebration will be held Sunday, June 11 at Pearson Park from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. Planned events include a parade, followed by a stage presentation from local performers, a special recognition of WWII military veterans, as well as this year’s essay contest winners. As is tradition, cake and ice cream will be served and this year BBQ will be offered for a nominal fee.
